Welcome to Tatanka Academy

Tatanka Academy is a tuition-free, public K-3rd grade school with an integrated childcare and school readiness program for 3- and 4-year-old children. Tatanka Academy believes that children learn best in enriched learning environments with small class sizes, engaged licensed teachers, and full-year programming. We feature research-based best practices, proven age 3 through 3rd grade educational models, holistic care, and parenting support.

Our History

Operated by Baby’s Space, Tatanka Academy extends the organization’s mission to graduate children (and families) who are healthy, compassionate, well-adjusted, prepared, educated, and contributors to thriving neighborhoods by providing year-round, high quality elementary education designed from the child’s point of view. Initiated in 2007 in response to the needs of kindergarten students and their families who participated in the Baby’s Space early childhood educational program at the Little Earth Neighborhood Early Learning Center, Tatanka Academy moved from Little Earth into the former Tuttle Community School in 2010.

Our School

Tatanka Academy is a program of Baby’s Space and a Contract Alternative Elementary School of the Minneapolis Public Schools. Our school maintains low student-to-teacher ratios, small class sizes, an extended year and academic and behavioral supports through public school funding, grant support and individual donations.
